Brilliant.

Washington also gets far too much discredit for Fort Necessity. He didn’t pick that as battleground, he was building a road for supply and hastily assembled a stockade along the way, he was then honorably reversed at that battle.

As far as him being taciturn- that’s one of his greatest strengths.

I wasn't looking forward to Presidents Day other than for my own reflections rather than rummaging through popular media for their reductions and arguments with bones of the past. Thank you for giving us the person to consider with the reminder that bearing the core values of service also bears significant personal struggle with accountability to the tragedies of war.

Excellent essay. The man we know as General Washington was forged through unbelievable trials and tragedy. Far too often we learn of the men after they achieve greatness but understanding the crucibles these men endured hold even greater lessons for us to carry forward.
